CONDITIONS WE MANAGE

Thyroid Problems We Treat

Each thyroid problem is confirmed with blood tests before treatment starts.

SIGNS & EVALUATION

Signs of a Thyroid Problem

Thyroid problems come on slowly, so the signs are easy to miss. Get your thyroid tested if you notice:

Tiredness and feeling slow

Feeling cold

Weight gain or loss without a reason

Hair fall

Palpitations or shaking hands

Feeling hot and sweaty

Irregular periods

Swelling in the neck

When else should you get tested?

Get your thyroid tested even without symptoms if you are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant, or a close family member has thyroid disease.

A daily thyroxine tablet for an underactive thyroid, or antithyroid tablets for an overactive one, with referral for radioiodine if needed.

04

Regular follow-up

TSH is checked 6 to 8 weeks after each dose change, then every 6 to 12 months once your thyroid reports and symptoms are steady.

ABOUT THE PHYSICIAN

Thyroid Care with Dr. Tushyanth V

MBBS, MD(General Medicine)
TNMC Reg. No.141260

Dr. Tushyanth V treats underactive and overactive thyroid, goitre and thyroid problems in pregnancy, with thyroid tests done in the hospital's own lab.

He adjusts the dose step by step, rechecking TSH 6 to 8 weeks after each change, until your reports and symptoms are steady.

Most thyroid reports are ready the same day, so the blood test and the consultation can usually be done in one visit, and your dose changed the same morning.

THYROID FAQS

Thyroid Questions Answered

Do I have to take thyroid tablets for life?

For most people with an underactive thyroid, yes. The tablet replaces a hormone the gland no longer makes and is safe long-term at the right dose. For an overactive thyroid, tablets are usually given for 12 to 18 months.

Is my weight gain because of thyroid?

An underactive thyroid can add a few kilos, much of it fluid, and this settles with treatment. It is rarely the main reason for large weight gain.

How should I take my thyroid tablet?

Alone with water on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Keep iron and calcium tablets at least four hours apart from it.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your old thyroid reports, the tablet strip showing your dose, and a list of other medicines and supplements. Tell us if you take biotin, as it can upset thyroid test results.

Which tests are done for thyroid?

TSH and free T4 first, then free T3, thyroid antibodies or an ultrasound only if needed. Most results are ready the same day.

How often do I need a follow-up?

6 to 8 weeks after each dose change, then every 6 to 12 months once your thyroid reports are stable.

Can I get pregnant if I have a thyroid problem?

Yes. Get your TSH checked before you plan, and tell us as soon as you are pregnant, since the dose usually needs to go up.
